It’s the year 2000 and no aspect of life has been left untouched by the rapid advancement of technology. Wherever you are on Earth, you’ve lived a life where connection through digital spaces is the optimal way to stay involved with friends and family all around the world. Terminally online? That’s you and everyone you know.
In a world dominated by virtual reality and cutting edge digital experiences, people are always on the lookout for new ways to push their real lives further and further out of mind. One such opportunity comes in the latest offering from the notorious CyberConnect Corporation: Fragment, an MMORPG that promises full one-to-one synchronization of one’s consciousness with a vibrant and expansive fantasy world.
The privilege of participating in the testing of such cutting edge technology is one only a select group of randomly selected people from across the world will get to experience. You’re one of those lucky few... but is lucky really the right word? For better or worse, the experience promises to change you forever, and if you’re particularly blessed, you may even survive it.
The World is a short-run, panfandom alternate universe game inspired by the .Hack series. With elements of horror and mystery, The World is a plot-centric game wherein characters will participate in the beta test of Fragment, a mysterious MMORPG that transfers their consciousness from an increasingly dull reality into a flourishing fantasy world where nothing is quite as innocent as it first seems. Player choices play a critical role in shaping the plot and determining the final outcome of the game.
Welcome to The World! This is a short-term game set to run for a period of four months from July 29th to December 2nd. Welcome! This is a private game open to those on milky's (shitpost), Amb's (stellazzio), and Lavender's (revelries) plurk lists and those directly invited by the rest of the mod team.
If you aren't a friend of either head mod but are interested in checking out the game, feel free to request an invitation via the mod contact page. Friends and +1s are given first priority when processing and accepting applications, but if the concept interests you, don't hesitate to let us know!
Do you know what an MMO is? You do? Good. You know all you need to know to play in The World. While this is a game based off of the .Hack franchise, all one needs to know to join are the basics. Any canon-specific terminology and information will be introduced to you through events.

AU planning:
i have had no time to plan so all of this is off the cuff EVERYONE WOULD NEED A RENAME JUST AS A HEADS UP help i cry
- Beel would be a college freshman focusing in sports from a huge family of all boys, he got talked into joining video games in general to please one of his brothers but likes it for the strategy and to be more support than anything else. Big foodie, likes to cook, probably can catch him eating on mic way too much etc etc etc but he's the MMORPG friend that talks very little and doesn't bother with sidequests but pulls their weight when you need it. Tank build. Has a myspace/instagram/whatever is around at this time page with pictures of food and workout tips.
- Nobody knows what Solomon does and you could probably assume he's a bot, he keeps online and offline very very separate and spams emojis way too much to everyone's detriment. He is very bad at any minigames. Don't make him play minigames, he will always lose somehow even though he thinks he's great. IRL he's something incredibly prolific probably in tech or science, maybe even for some big steps in VR study, but has kind of gone off the radar and has the money (or the power) to keep people quiet and play his Fun Vidya Games :) :) :). Magic/ranged build.
- Lutha is a prissy rich kid who's only known money and the language that comes from it, but due to a falling out with his parents is basically just grabbing a motorcycle and Running, doing odd jobs and sleeping in libraries and has probably done some jail time already, but he doesn't care because at least he isn't home. Probably would be voted most likely to kick a child in the face. Plays violin for petty cash. Introduced to the game through a music club at his most recent stop, he plays it for the soundtrack and literally nothing else. Ranged build.
-Takua is like that kid that joins every single club at one point in highschool and never sticks to any of it because he either gets bored or gets distracted. Heavy procrastinator, loves video games but never makes any progress because he's the type to go pick flowers and fall into a river and then forget there's an actual story happening. Amicable but really flighty. Has bounced from foster home to foster home all his life and is now old enough to no longer be a ward of the state, doesn't have anyone to really call family and tends to be a little awkward because of it. Has a pet crab called Pewku that he defends with his life. Loves to tell stories, loves history, gets a little carried away. He will rant about his crab while climbing a cliff just because he can. Absolutely changes the build and appearance of his avatar about every three weeks. Everyone hates him probably.
- Jaller is an army kid, born and bred, already in training for the reserves and very much to the book. A lot more serious than he should be, very Lawful Good in every aspect. Has a crush on a girl he met down at the beach once but he'd probably explode rather than talk about it. Stuck a lot in the expectations of not only his family but in people from the base that he's heard failures about in his role, struggling with the idea of meeting status quo vs wanting to be a force of change to break the cycle of poor leadership. Still very young but has trouble pushing back against the authority he relies on. Video games are a guilty pleasure but he's still pretty by the book and has a hard time just letting go when he plays, can be kind of a stick in the mud sometimes but is very good at taking charge when he gets out of his own head. Incredibly loyal. DPS build.

there are Many Idiots and three of them i haven't even played before in a game setting before... possibly a fourth now that lav is pointing a gun at me for Thoma Genshin but i'll leave that spot free for other genshins tbh
